How To Fix Icemaker Leaking Water

An icemaker works tirelessly to help you make ice in the comfort of your home. Like any other appliance, an icemaker can develop problems that may need to be fixed to restore the appliance back to its good working order. One of the common problems with an icemaker is leaking water.

An icemaker can leak water as a result of backed-up condensation drains, jammed ice, a misaligned fill valve and cup, or the icemaker is leaning. The solution to an icemaker that's leaking water depends on the cause of the problem.

Let’s look at some of the quick fixes for a leaking icemaker.

Align the Ice Cube Fill Valve and Cup

An icemaker comprises of an ice fill-cup which is filled with water by a compact spigot. For the ice fill-cup to collect water, the spigot must be aligned with the ice fill-cup. A misalignment between the ice cube fill valve and cup will result in water running directly into the icemaker compartment. All you have to do is to check the condition of the fill valve and fill cup to find out if they're aligned. If there are out of place, carefully re-fasten them to stop the leaks.

Level The Fridge and Icemaker

Your icemaker may leak water as a result of the fridge or icemaker not standing level. The simple solution to this problem is using a laser leveling tool to check if the fridge and icemaker are level. If the ice machine isn't level, simply readjust the icemaker compartment floor to restore it to a level position. If the fridge is leaning to one side, you can extend the fridge's feet or use a wooden wedge to ensure it's level.

Break Up the Ice Accumulated in the Dispenser Chute

Ice jams in the dispenser chute can lead to a leaking icemaker. To fix this problem, pour a cup of warm water down the dispenser chute to thaw the built-up ice. Alternatively, you can use a wooden spoon to break up ice jams, but do it with care to avoid damaging components of your icemaker. Once you get rid of the ice, wipe down the chute with warm water.

Clear Out the Condensation Drains

If you notice a layer of ice over the condensation drain, pour hot water on the drain to melt the ice. Thereafter, wipe up the excess water, so that it does not refreeze.

Inspect the Water Supply Pipe

The water supply pipe could be damaged, thereby causing water to leak. Inspect the pipe to see if there are any damages on it and call a technician to replace the whole pipe if it's broken.

When your icemaker starts to leak water, it’s necessary to have the appliance repaired at the earliest to avoid costly problems. Ignoring a leaking icemaker could ruin your flooring and carpet, provide an environment for mold growth, and cause many other problems.
