4 Sneaky Water Damage Causes

When you think of water damage, the thought of floods and storms come to mind. Although those are huge causes of water damage, sometimes the source of the damage could be coming from inside your home.

In this blog post, our professionals from Leak Detection of Atlanta will explain the sneaky causes of water damage and ways to notice it.

Ways to Notice

As water damage in your home is a hard thing to notice, there are ways to realize you’re falling victim to water damage in your own household.

Firstly, odors. The most noticeable way of realizing it, is the smell it gives off. If that odor is strong and not fading away for a couple days, it’s time to call the professionals to inspect your home.

Secondly, your walls. As there are pipes running throughout your home, there may be a case of a bursting pipe. Once this pipe leaks, the water makes contact with your walls which can cause the wall to bubble. Another way to notice is by seeing your wallpaper peeling off as it has fully absorbed the water.

Thirdly, humidity. It is normal to feel like the humidity and moisture in your home is high. Sometimes after rainfall it can feel this way, but if it doesn’t fade after a while then that can be an issue.

An add-on to humidity is mold growth. Ultimately, this is the result of water damage. Mold growth depends on the water, humidity, moisture, and air. Once all of these pieces are in play, it thrives. To spot mold, look for dark colored spots scattered around the damaged area.

The Four Causes

  • Burst pipes. Most times this is an issue experienced in the cold. As water freezes, it also expands. This expansion applies pressure on the pipe and eventually leaks or bursts. This can also happen if your plumbing lines aren’t clean. A simple clog can mess up the whole function of the pipe. If you are experiencing a bursting pipe, then locate your water valves and shut them off to stop additional damage from happening.
  • Plumbing. Poor plumbing over a long period of time can cause detrimental damage to your home. Make sure to do check-ups on your faucets and pipes to avoid damage. Failure to do so can result in a water damage restoration in the future.
  • Malfunction in your appliances. There are plenty of machines in your home that require water to do the work they were created for. Your water heater, dishwasher, and washing machine use quite a bit of water to operate. The hoses attached on these machines which transport the water can get worn out. These hoses breaking can cause heavy water damage. If you’ve been using your machines for more than 5 years and haven’t changed the hoses, then it is a good time to get on that.
  • Your crawling space. As air ventilates through this area, it can get moist and humid in the summers. Since this is under your home it can affect the household as well. This is why it is important to check-up on your crawl space every once in a while.
